Any Surface

HairTG-Surface is a highly versatile hair/fur material generator, applying to any 3D surface in Substance 3D Painter. Typical usages include:

  • Hair Scalp - Base hair layer, short/shaved hair etc.
  • Body hair - Short beard, torso etc.
  • Fur - Fur coat, gloves, animal body etc.
  • Long hair - Long hair following a directional flow.

HairTG-Surface generates hair/fur in areas where additional geometry, such as hair cards, is not required.

Versatile

HairTG-Surface may generate countless types of hair. Straight, frizzy, homogenous, heterogeneous, thin, thick, partially bald, variable density, lengths, colors etc.

Here are some key features of the Hair Generator:

  • Progressions - Vary the hair length or other properties per areas using density masks.
  • Hair Flow - Define curves telling the direction the hair should flow and the Hair Generator will follow them.
  • Properties - Dozens of hair properties are available such as length, density, distribution etc.
  • Shaping - Various shaping options to group and bend the hair at several locations along their length.
  • Coloring - A vast amount of coloring options are available, including color presets, per-hair coloring, coloring variations along hair length, dyed hair, local coloring etc.
  • Layering - Thanks to Painter layering, several Hair Generators may be stacked and blended together to create complex hair styles.

Fur

HairTG-Surface may also be used to generate fur materials. With its hair grouping and shaping controls, a wide variety of fur types may be represented.

Long hair

HairTG-Surface enables to generate long hair as material only, i.e. without hair cards. The Artist defines the main flow lines the hair will take along their length. This is suitable for base hair layers or even full designs as shown below.

Warp Hair Covers

Once the hair cover material has been made with HairTG-Surface, the Painter Warp projection may be used to adapt this material to any character (the Substance 3D Designer part in the below video is optional, everything can be done without leaving Painter).

Masks and Directions

HairTG-Surface uses masks to define areas to grow hair onto as well as hair properties.

Masks may be painted using the regular Painter tools, or be generated procedurally using tools provided with HairTG-Surface. Manual painting and procedural generation may also be mixed. For example the outline of the Hair Mask may be painted, and then filled-up and distorted procedurally.

In addition to a full set of video tutorials convering all the features of the tool, HairTG-Surface comes with several Painter sample projects you can learn from or use as startup for your own projects.

HairTG-Surface Pro

HairTG-Surface Pro includes two HairTG prpducts as well as exclusive tools for Substance 3D Designer:

  • HairTG-Surface
  • HairTG-Facial Hair
  • Masking and flow tools for Substance 3D Designer.
  • Access to the HairTG-Surface base hair generator component (SBSAR) the Painter components are built from.
  • SBS files of the Painter components built upon the HairTG-Surface base component so you can create your own as well as custom designs (eyebrows, eyelashes etc.) for HairTG-Facial Hair.
  • SBS files of the all the built-in designs of HairTG-Facial Hair (26 in total) that you can study and reuse for your own designs.
